At the Johannesburg event, Lillian Barnard, President of Microsoft Africa, unveiled the company’s ambitious plan to equip four million African youths with digital, cybersecurity, and AI skills. Highlighting Africa’s significant youth population—with 60% under the age of 35—Barnard emphasized the transformative potential of these skilling initiatives.
“This technology represents a new era for Africa,” Barnard stated. “By providing skilling opportunities and access to industry-recognized certifications, our youth will be well-positioned to compete on the global stage.”
Bridging the Skills Gap
To support this vision, Microsoft introduced the AI Skills Navigator portal, a free learning platform designed to guide users through their AI knowledge journey. This comprehensive tool includes assessments to help individuals and organizations build in-demand AI skillsets.
Barnard also highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving these goals. “Working closely with ICT training providers, governments, NGOs, and public and private sector entities is essential to expanding the reach of this crucial skilling project,” she explained.
