Economic Boost for Small Businesses Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has approved N1 billion in grants for 9,403 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Biu and Hawul Local Government Areas. This initiative is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to empower local businesses, reduce poverty, and create job opportunities.
Breakdown of Grant Distribution During the grant disbursement ceremony in Biu on Tuesday, Governor Zulum reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting small businesses and youth entrepreneurship. The funds will be distributed as follows:
- N3 million for 5,603 entrepreneurs in Biu
- N7 million for 2,000 businesses in Hawul
- 1,800 youth and vulnerable families to benefit from the initiative
“We are committed to supporting small businesses and young entrepreneurs to build a strong economic foundation in Borno State. This is in fulfillment of our campaign promises,” Governor Zulum stated.
He urged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely to maximize their impact on economic growth. Additionally, he directed the Borno State Social Investment Management Programme (BOSIMP) to identify 2,000 more vulnerable youths for the next phase of the initiative.
Infrastructure Development for Teachers and Health Workers Beyond economic empowerment, Governor Zulum also laid the foundation for 600 new housing units across the state to accommodate teachers and health workers. The housing projects include:
- 100 units each in Biu, Magumeri, Hawul, and Gubio for teachers
- 200 units at the Borno State University Teaching Hospital for health workers
Each housing estate will be equipped with essential infrastructure such as clinics, roads, drainage systems, sports centers, and other social amenities to enhance living conditions.
Commitment to Public Sector Welfare Governor Zulum reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of civil servants, particularly teachers and healthcare workers. He emphasized that both housing and economic empowerment initiatives are crucial for rebuilding the state’s economy and ensuring long-term development.
Previous Support Initiatives In July 2024, Governor Zulum disbursed N450 million to 45,000 widows and vulnerable women in the state as a form of palliative support. He clarified that the goal of these interventions is not to create dependency but to assist families who have lost their livelihoods due to the Boko Haram crisis.
These strategic investments highlight the Borno State government’s dedication to economic stability and social welfare, aiming to foster sustainable development across the state.
