The Burkinabe government places digital transformation at the forefront of its development agenda. Recognizing the pivotal role of technology in advancing socio-economic progress, Ouagadougou is keen on harnessing digital solutions to achieve its developmental objectives.
Seeking Financial Assistance: To realize its digital strategy, Burkina Faso seeks assistance from the World Bank. Specifically, the government is seeking parliamentary approval for a $150 million loan from the International Development Association (IDA) to fund the Digital Transformation Acceleration Project (PACTDIGITAL).
Cabinet Approval: During a cabinet meeting held on Thursday, April 11 in Ouagadougou, the government authorized the submission of the loan bill to the Transitional Legislative Assembly for ratification. This move highlights the administration’s commitment to advancing its digital agenda.
Objectives of PACTDIGITAL: PACTDIGITAL aims to bolster access to digital infrastructure, public services, and digital skills across Burkina Faso. Building upon the achievements of previous initiatives like the West African Regional Communications Infrastructure Project (PRICAO-BF) and the e-Burkina project, PACTDIGITAL seeks to lay the groundwork for further digital advancements.
Utilization of Funds: The funds provided by the IDA will be utilized to expand broadband access in underserved areas, enhance the availability and accessibility of digital public services, and improve digital skills among various beneficiaries. These beneficiaries include women, youth, people with disabilities, displaced persons, public employees, private businesses, and training institutes.
Commitment to Inclusive Development: The decisions taken during the cabinet meeting underscore the transitional government’s dedication to steering Burkina Faso towards sustainable and inclusive development.
