Deutsche Bank Backs Côte d’Ivoire’s Water Initiative
Deutsche Bank has secured a $156 million financing facility to support Côte d’Ivoire’s “Eau pour Tous” (Water for All) initiative. This program aims to expand access to clean drinking water and contribute to the country’s sustainable development goals.
Funding Structure and Implementation
The financing is structured as an export credit facility, allowing the Ivorian government to develop essential water infrastructure. The projects will be led by the Mitrelli Group, with part of the loan backed by Atradius Dutch State Business N.V., the Netherlands’ export credit agency. This backing helps mitigate financial risks while supporting vital development in emerging markets.
Water for All: A National Initiative
Launched in 2017, the Water for All program seeks to provide safe drinking water to 97% of Côte d’Ivoire’s population by 2025. The first phase, supported by this financing, includes the construction of 95 urban hydraulic systems. These systems, featuring water towers and expanded distribution networks, will improve access to clean water in underserved and rural communities.
Key Benefits of the Initiative
The Water for All program is expected to bring several positive impacts, including:
- Improved Public Health – Reducing waterborne diseases by ensuring access to clean drinking water.
- Increased Economic Productivity – Especially for women and children who often spend hours fetching water.
- Enhanced Quality of Life – Providing communities with a reliable and safe water supply.
- Greater Resilience – Strengthening the nation’s infrastructure for long-term water security.
Deutsche Bank’s Commitment to Sustainable Development
“This financing exemplifies Deutsche Bank’s commitment to supporting essential infrastructure that improves lives. By helping Côte d’Ivoire expand access to clean water, we contribute to healthier communities and long-term economic development,” said Alarik d’Ornhjelm, Head of Structured Trade & Export Finance for the Middle East and Africa.
This investment marks a significant step toward achieving Côte d’Ivoire’s water access goals, ensuring a healthier and more sustainable future for its citizens.
