The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has taken proactive steps to deliver a substantial aid package of $906,205 (N1,449,928,000) to Nigerian communities impacted by the devastating floods of 2022.
In a move aimed at bolstering humanitarian efforts and aiding recovery, ECOWAS has partnered with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Nigeria, to channel this vital assistance towards community resilience building and recovery.
Focused Distribution Efforts in Flood-Affected States
Working closely with the Nigerian Red Cross and the ministry, ECOWAS has targeted the most affected states, including Adamawa, Anambra, Kebbi, Kogi, Oyo, and Rivers, with the intent of providing aid to 3,500 households in these regions.
Transparent Aid Delivery and Comprehensive Relief Packages
A delegation from the ECOWAS Commission, led by Mr. Godfrey Ameachi Alozie, Program Officer for Humanitarian Affairs, has overseen the transparent distribution of aid, ensuring that the most vulnerable households were prioritized. Each recipient household received a holistic relief package comprising essential food supplies and a debit card loaded with N91,500, complemented by a capacious monthly withdrawal limit of N30,500.
In a demonstration of its commitment to long-term community support, ECOWAS also inaugurated a new borehole to enhance access to clean water, reinforcing the ongoing resilience and recovery efforts in the affected areas.
