The Jospong Group of Companies (JGC) has announced plans to secure $400 million in funding from the African Export-Import Bank (Afrexim Bank) to support its ambitious projects in waste management and rice production in Lagos State, Nigeria, and Ghana. The funding is expected to drive comprehensive initiatives aimed at sustainable development and economic growth in these regions.

Transforming Waste Management in Lagos State

A significant portion of the funding will be allocated to enhancing waste management infrastructure in Lagos. The project involves constructing nine advanced waste processing plants designed to convert waste into recyclable materials, fertilizers, and other valuable products. In addition to these plants, Jospong Group plans to establish transfer stations and enhance waste collection services to improve efficiency across the state.

Noah Gyimah, the Group’s Chief Investment Officer, highlighted the importance of these initiatives, stating, “By turning waste into value, we are not only addressing environmental concerns but also creating job opportunities and promoting sustainable economic growth.”

Expanding Agricultural Ventures in Ghana

As part of its broader strategy, Jospong Group also plans to invest in the agricultural sector. The company is seeking an additional $50 million in funding for its rice production project in Ghana. This initiative aligns with efforts to enhance food security across the region.

“They Afrexim Bank expressed great interest in food security and funding options for our rice production business,” Gyimah explained, emphasizing the importance of agriculture in Africa’s development.

Discussions at COP 29: Exploring Broader Funding Options

The announcement comes on the sidelines of the ongoing COP 29 summit, where Jospong Group is engaging with key stakeholders. During these discussions, Afrexim Bank expressed its willingness to explore various financing options, including research and development funding for feasibility studies.

Gyimah elaborated on the conversations, stating, “The interesting part of that conversation was the various options they offer, including research and development funding for feasibility studies at accommodating rates.”

Scaling Waste Management Solutions Across Africa

Beyond Nigeria and Ghana, Jospong Group is expanding its successful waste management model to other African countries. The company is in advanced discussions with stakeholders in Uganda and Kenya, aiming to replicate its integrated waste management solutions to drive sustainable development in these regions.

Advancing Africa’s Sustainable Development Goals

With its focus on waste management and agriculture, Jospong Group is playing a crucial role in advancing Africa’s sustainable development agenda. The partnership with Afrexim Bank could serve as a catalyst for other private-sector investments in infrastructure and food security.

By securing this funding, Jospong Group is set to make significant strides in transforming waste management and boosting agricultural productivity, ultimately contributing to the continent’s economic resilience and sustainability.
