In a significant move to foster technological advancement, the Nigerian government, in collaboration with Google, has unveiled a N100 million (approximately $100,000) Artificial Intelligence (AI) Fund. This initiative aims to support Nigerian startups that are harnessing AI to develop innovative solutions tailored to local challenges.

A Vision for Homegrown Innovation

Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Honourable Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, shared insights on the fund in a post on X. He stated that the AI Fund, coordinated by the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), is pivotal for leveraging future technologies. “This fund is a critical step toward developing homegrown innovations that accelerate economic growth and contribute to the global technology ecosystem,” he emphasized.

The NCAIR serves as a dedicated branch of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), focusing on promoting research and the practical application of emerging technologies in alignment with Nigeria’s national interests.

Google’s Commitment to African Innovation

Olumide Balogun, Google’s West Africa Director, reiterated the tech giant’s dedication to supporting the AI Fund. He remarked, “Google’s backing for this initiative is part of our broader mission to boost digital capabilities across Africa. We are focused on providing Nigerian startups with the tools, mentorship, and resources necessary for global success.”

Key Features of the AI Fund

The AI Fund is specifically designed to empower ten Nigerian startups that utilize AI in their technology products. Each selected startup will benefit from:

  • Financial Support: Grant funding of up to ₦10 million (around $10,000) per startup.
  • Technical Expertise: Access to Google’s AI tools, resources, and mentorship from experienced Google engineers.
  • Mentorship: Opportunities to collaborate closely with Google’s AI experts for insights and guidance.
  • Network and Visibility: Connection to Google’s extensive network, enhancing global exposure for startups.
  • Sectoral Impact: The potential to develop AI-driven solutions across disciplines such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and governance, making a tangible impact.

Eligibility Criteria for Startups

To qualify for the AI Fund, startups must meet the following criteria:

  • Be headquartered in Nigeria and focused on solutions for the Nigerian market, with a potential for broader African or global reach.
  • Demonstrate market fit and significant growth potential.
  • Be a core AI technology company with a live product in the market that is compatible with Google products to leverage for growth.

Background and Future Directions

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy held the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (NAIS) Workshop, marking a crucial moment in Nigeria’s journey toward AI adoption. From this workshop emerged the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, a progressive roadmap aimed at utilizing AI for economic development, improved governance, and an enhanced quality of life for all Nigerians.
