GoLemon, the Lagos-based grocery delivery startup founded by four former senior Paystack executives, has ceased operations after 28 months, leaving behind a trail of 40,000 registered customers, tens of thousands of delivered orders, and more than ₦2 billion worth of groceries moved across Nigeria’s commercial capital.

In a Medium post titled “Thank you, Lagos” published on July 29, 2026, GoLemon said it had become “part of thousands of weekly routines” across the city. But despite efforts to raise additional funding, the company said it “couldn’t find a sustainable path forward within the time available to us.”

The shutdown marks the end of one of the most closely watched consumer startup experiments to emerge from Nigeria’s fintech diaspora. GoLemon was founded in March 2024 by Yinka Adewuyi, Gbadegbo Gbade-Oyelakin, Abdulrahman Jogbojogbo, and Abiola Showemimo, all alumni of Paystack, the payments company acquired by Stripe for $200 million in 2020.

At its peak, GoLemon employed 37 people, according to PitchBook data, and its Android app notched more than 5,000 downloads. The company’s website, active as recently as March 2025, claimed “12,000+ homes use and love GoLemon.”

    From Paystack to groceries

GoLemon’s pitch was to use technology to make grocery shopping simpler and more reliable for Lagos households. The startup built its own fulfilment infrastructure, sourcing bulk products directly from local farmers and fast-moving consumer goods manufacturers, and offered an inventory of more than 7,000 items ranging from fresh produce to cleaning supplies.

The company carved out a niche in the crowded Lagos delivery market by targeting bulk buyers. Chief Executive Yinka Adewuyi said GoLemon’s typical customer made purchases with an average basket size of ₦50,000, allowing the company to offer delivery fees as low as ₦300 by sorting orders based on proximity.

Operations evolved quickly. The startup began with 48-hour delivery windows, then piloted next-day delivery in November 2024, a move that required round-the-clock picking, packing, and quality checks. By December 2025, GoLemon had struck a strategic partnership with Chowdeck, the Y Combinator-backed instant delivery giant, to supply inventory for Chowdeck’s dark stores while maintaining its own independent platform.

The company raised backing from Byld Ventures, Uncovered Fund, and HoaQ, according to CB Insights.

The GoLemon shutdown: When the runway ended

Despite the traction and even a listing by this publication as a startup to watch in 2025, the numbers were not enough to convince investors to fund another round. On July 29, 2026, GoLemon posted its farewell.

“Today, we’re sharing the difficult news that GoLemon is bringing its operations to a close,” the team wrote. “Despite our efforts to raise additional funding, we couldn’t find a sustainable path forward within the time available to us.”

The company said it is no longer accepting new orders. Outstanding refunds have been resolved, and a support team will remain available through in-app live chat until Sunday, August 2, to handle any remaining issues.

The human cost is measurable. Around 20% of the GoLemon team have already secured new roles, the company said, and it is actively trying to place the remainder. The startup has set up a dedicated email, peopleops@golemon.co, to connect former staff with employers hiring across engineering, product, operations, and growth.

The company’s closure is the latest in a string of Nigerian consumer startup shutdowns as venture funding for African tech tightens. For a team that once processed payments at Paystack, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated startup exits, the end of the grocery dream is a reminder that even proven operators cannot outrun unit economics in a capital-scarce market.

The final line of their farewell post reads, “We’ll always be grateful for the chance to build GoLemon, and proud of the people who made it possible.”
