Google’s Pixel 11 event might include the company’s first answer to Apple’s AirTag. A leaked image (shown below) and store listings make clear that Google is close to releasing a Pixel Tag that could become Android’s default item tracker.

As 9to5Google has learned, the Pixel Tag would be a simple, pill-shaped device with a speaker. Like the AirTag, it wouldn’t have clips or holes to attach it to other devices — you’ll need a case to put it on your keychain. That could make it work better for purses, wallets, and luggage.

Technical features like ultra-wideband (UWB) positioning aren’t available. Listings make clear that the draw will be support for Google’s Find My Device network — you can find a lost bag just as easily as your phone. It’s built with “privacy and personal data in mind,” one

It’s possible the Pixel Tag will be announced alongside the Pixel 11 phones on August 12, although this isn’t guaranteed. One store page has the European price at just under €26 after tax, suggesting a price between $20 and $30 for U.S. buyers.

The Pixel Tag will be far from the only major Android item tracker to choose from. Chipolo, Motorola, Tile, and others all have compelling options that often have Find My Device support and come in shapes that might be better-suited to your backpack or wallet.

Whether Google is competitive in sheer value might depend on the presence of UWB (included in devices like the Moto Tag series) and its price.

AirTags aren’t the best Bluetooth trackers anymore

Despite its usefulness, the AirTag has lost its crown.

However, the technical capabilities might be secondary to what the device represents. Just as the AirTag is the go-to item tracker for iPhone owners, the Pixel Tag will be the official choice for Android. You might pick Google’s product simply because you know it will work reliably with Find My Device, even if the alternatives are cheaper or more capable.
