The list of new and returning shows to watch this weekend is all about variety—five shows across five different streaming services. On Netflix, one of the streamer’s most popular young adult dramas comes to an end with its fifth and final season. I’ve watched this adventure show since the beginning, so it’s my top pick of the week.

On Hulu, a record-breaking sitcom returns for its unprecedented eighteenth season. The remaining three shows on the list include a travel show hosted by a famous comedian, a crime drama on Paramount+, and a sports documentary set in the world of women’s college basketball. All five shows can be streamed in the U.S.

    The Dynasty: UConn Huskies

Explore the history of women’s college basketball’s premier program

When I think of women’s basketball, one team immediately comes to mind: the UConn Huskies. Head coach Geno Auriemma turned a college in the middle of nowhere in Connecticut into a national power. Auriemma is the winningest coach in college basketball history (1,288 wins) and has won the most women’s Division I basketball titles (12). He also happens to be one of the most demanding coaches to play for, as he expects excellence.

If you want to see the secret to success, watch The Dynasty: UConn Huskies, a three-part documentary about the rise of the UConn women’s basketball team. You might think you know about sacrifice. Listen to UConn’s players talk about what it takes to play for Coach Auriemma, and it might change your definition of sacrifice and toughness.

The Dynasty: UConn Huskies premieres on Apple TV on August 21.

    Average Joe season 2

Dark comedy returns after a hiatus

Average Joe looks a bit different in season 2. It’s been about three years since the events of the season 1 finale, and this time around, the series moves from BET+ to Paramount+. I know star Deon Cole from his comedic work on Black-ish and through his stand-up specials on Netflix. I’m in favor of actors who refuse to box themselves into one genre, and that’s what Cole has done with Average Joe. The series mixes elements of a dramatic crime thriller with dark comedy. Joe Washington (Cole) is an ordinary plumber who learns his deceased father stole millions from the Russian mob.

A reluctant Joe must now enter the criminal underworld to pay off his debt and avoid the mafia’s wrath. Joe thought he had closed that chapter of his life in season 1. However, things get worse for Joe in season 2, as he finds himself fighting for his life while battling international criminals in Cape Town, South Africa.

The first two episodes of Average Joe season 2 are now streaming on Paramount+. New episodes will air weekly on Wednesdays.

Conan O’Brien Must Go season 3

The comedian takes his show on the road

Conan O’Brien is a national treasure. I’m never in a bad mood when I watch anything with Conan, from his successful podcast to his work hosting the Oscars. His travel show, Conan O’Brien Must Go, returns for season 3, and it’s such a delight. This season, Conan visits the Netherlands, the Philippines, Morocco, and India.

Because it’s Conan, the show features that frantic energy audiences have come to love. I’m expecting some wild antics from Conan as he visits, bonds with the locals, and takes on hilarious adventures. In the trailer, Conan and his pasty skin are buried in the hot sand in the name of comedy. That’s Conan in a nutshell.

Conan O’Brien Must Go season 3 premieres on Friday, August 21 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max. New episodes air on Fridays at the same time.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 18

The gang isn’t going away anytime soon

How can It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia be this funny 18 seasons into its run? Well, the gang plays by its own rules. The show has never shied away from pushing boundaries and having its characters do horrible things to each other. But it’s all in the name of comedy, and this show always brings the laughs.

In season 18, the usual gang returns, including Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), Charlie (Charlie Day), Mac (Rob McElhenney), and Frank (Danny DeVito). In the first episode, Frank Marries a Corpse, Dennis and Dee try to convince Frank to go through with a wedding because they want to receive an inheritance. I wouldn’t expect anything less from this group of narcissists.

The first two episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 18 are now streaming on Hulu. New episodes air on Monday nights on FX and FXX. Stream the episodes the next day on Hulu.

    Outer Banks season 5

    Say goodbye to the Pogues

I’m going to miss Outer Banks. The teen adventure show has been around since 2020, and it has given us more than 35 hours of television. Admittedly, the show has become a little insane, especially considering these teens have somehow avoided jail time and thwarted numerous mercenaries. I’m willing to suspend disbelief to spend some time with the Pogues.

Speaking of the Pogues, the group is reeling after the death of JJ. They try to return to the Outer Banks, but they quickly find out that the Kooks want to eliminate them for good. As if things couldn’t get any worse, Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane), the man who killed JJ, is still on the run and in possession of the Blue Crown. It’s going to take a miracle to make it out of this one alive, but the Pogues always have a few tricks up their sleeves.

All episodes of Outer Banks season 5 are now streaming on Netflix.

More shows to watch this weekend

In addition to these five shows, there are plenty of things you can watch this weekend. If you head to Apple TV, there are several sci-fi programs that I would highly recommend, including Silo and Severance. For those who love Netflix, stream shows like Seinfeld or I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson if you don’t have a lot of time.
