The “Miss Sarah” Fellowship offers Black women writers the chance to enjoy a serene, creative space to develop or complete a writing project. With a focus on providing a restful environment, the fellowship supports writers at any stage of their career in cultivating new ideas or advancing ongoing work.
For 2025, the fellowship will focus on the Poetry genre.
Fellowship Details
The selected writer will receive a 10-day residency in July 2025, with the option to stay at either:
- Trillium Arts’ Firefly Creek apartment in Mars Hill, NC, or
- Montford Manor, the residence of E. Patrick Johnson and Stephen Lewis, near downtown Asheville, NC.
The fellowship also includes a $1,000 stipend and transportation to and from Asheville, NC. Additional benefits will be personalized to meet the awardee’s needs.
Residency Dates
The preferred dates for the 2025 “Miss Sarah” Fellowship are July 10-20, though alternative dates may be considered.
Eligibility
- The fellowship is open to Black women writers at any stage of their writing careers.
- There is no application fee.
- Travel expenses within the United States will be covered. International travel expenses are the responsibility of the applicant.
Application Timeline
- Application Deadline: Friday, November 15, 2024, at 11:59 PM EST.
- Notification Date: Applicants will be notified by April 1, 2025.

Application Requirements
Applicants must submit the following documents as PDF or Word files (no larger than 10 MB each):
- CV or Resume: Not to exceed 5 pages.
- Fellowship Proposal Statement: A one-page description of the project you plan to work on during the fellowship.
- “Why Trillium Arts?” Statement: A one-page explanation of how the fellowship at Trillium Arts will benefit your creative work.
- Letter of Recommendation: Submitted by an outside recommender, addressing the significance of your project and your writing ability. The recommender should also answer specific questions outlined in the application.
- The letter must be submitted by November 18, 2024 (three days after the application deadline).
- Writing Sample: A sample of work-in-progress related to your proposed project, between 10-15 pages. The genre for 2025 is poetry, and all submissions must be original work.
Formatting Guidelines:
- Double-spaced text, one-inch margins, and a readable 12-point font.
- Include your name and the title of your piece at the top of each file.
- All writing samples must be submitted as one PDF document.
