In a significant gesture in line with its Africa Pledge, Airbnb, in conjunction with its hosts, has unveiled the 2023 Airbnb Community Fund. This fund is poised to distribute grants totaling $10 million to various organizations across the continent. The endeavor, which is part of Airbnb’s broader commitment to fostering economic empowerment, digital accessibility, and sustainability in Africa until 2025, will provide support to notable organizations such as The Wilderness Foundation Africa, Digify Africa, Wildlife ACT, Africa Ignite, A Rocha Kenya, and Breadline Africa.
Established in 2020, the Airbnb Community Fund has committed to disbursing $100 million globally by the close of 2030, with the aim of bolstering communities worldwide. In its third year, the fund has earmarked $10 million to assist over 120 nonprofits spanning 44 countries and six continents. Nearly $8 million of this sum was facilitated through partnerships with Airbnb hosts, who played a pivotal role in selecting organizations that address critical community needs.
African beneficiaries, including The Wilderness Foundation Africa and Digify Africa, were handpicked by the Airbnb Host Advisory Board, composed of 23 hosts representing the global host community. Furthermore, local Host Clubs, comprising volunteer hosts, collaborated to pinpoint, nominate, and vote on organizations with significant impacts on their respective localities. These grants aim to bolster both national and regional organizations addressing societal-level issues identified by the Host Advisory Board, as well as hyperlocal, community-driven initiatives selected by Host Club members.
