Launched in Kenya back in 2013, Mdundo has emerged as Africa’s foremost pan-African music service, committed to offering music conveniently and legally throughout the continent. In 2020, the company made its shares available on the Nasdaq First North Growth Market Denmark, experiencing a significant surge in user engagement thereafter, with 30.8 million monthly active users tuning in to music from over 172,000 content providers.
Artists are poised to receive an unprecedented payout ranging between US$1.2 million and US$1.5 million in royalties for the 2023/24 period, benefiting approximately 156,000 artists from Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, and Ghana.
“Our commitment goes beyond the mere creation of music; we are committed to nurturing the essence of African music. Mdundo’s Artist Royalty Payment Programme underscores our dedication to empowering artists, ensuring their voices are heard, and their earnings are rightfully deserved,” stated Wanjiku Koinange, Mdundo’s head of music and licensing.
The company has also recently forged a partnership with Kenya’s leading telecommunications provider, Safaricom, to introduce a subscription service exclusively for Safaricom customers. Collaborations of this nature aim to enhance the monetization of music for artists, providing a sustainable income stream and bolstering the longevity of music careers.
