Uniworld Boutique River Cruises has announced the appointment of Divan Viljoen as Sales and Marketing Manager for South Africa, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to growing its footprint in one of its most important emerging luxury travel markets.

In his new role, Viljoen will lead the strategic positioning of Uniworld in South Africa, with a strong focus on driving awareness of the brand as the pinnacle of luxury river cruising. He will work closely with both trade and consumer audiences to expand market reach, while ensuring that travel partners are equipped with the tools, insights and support needed to deliver exceptional experiences to their clients.

“Uniworld has always recognised South Africa as a key strategic market and remains deeply committed to its growth,” says Viljoen. “We are seeing a clear shift in how South Africans approach travel, with a growing appetite for immersive, high-end experiences that prioritise quality, convenience and authenticity over price alone. This is where Uniworld truly stands apart.”

Viljoen’s appointment comes at a time when demand for experiential luxury travel continues to rise, with river cruising gaining momentum among South African travellers seeking more curated and intimate journeys. Unlike traditional travel formats, river cruising offers seamless, all-inclusive itineraries that combine cultural immersion, fine dining and personalised service – all hallmarks of the Uniworld brand.

While the brand’s 2026 sailing programme is already nearing capacity, with approximately 75% of bookings secured, attention is already turning to 2027. This includes the introduction of three new “super ships” (S.S. Emilie, S.S. Marlene and S.S. São Gabriel) which will expand capacity and unlock new itinerary opportunities across Europe’s most iconic waterways.

“Looking ahead, our focus is not only on attracting new guests but also on strengthening relationships with our valued trade partners and past guests,” adds Viljoen. “We want to ensure that every touchpoint reflects the exceptional level of service and detail that defines the Uniworld experience.”

South African travellers continue to favour some of Uniworld’s most celebrated itineraries, including Castles Along the Rhine, Brilliant Bordeaux and Tulips & Windmills. These journeys offer a blend of scenic beauty, cultural depth and curated excursions, appealing to travellers looking for meaningful and memorable experiences.

Viljoen brings with him a deep passion for the travel industry and a strong commitment to elevating the river cruising category within the local market.

“I am most excited about sharing my passion for cruising with both consumers and trade partners, and showcasing that river cruising truly represents the very best in luxury travel,” he says. “I’m also looking forward to reconnecting with fellow travel professionals and industry leaders as we continue to grow and elevate the industry we all care so deeply about.”

As Uniworld continues to expand its presence globally, the South African market remains a key priority – one that reflects a broader shift towards more considered, experience-driven travel.
