A senior games buyer at a major retailer has warned that the supply of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S will not meet demand during the November launch of Grand Theft Auto 6.
The buyer, speaking anonymously to The Game Business, said ongoing hardware component shortages will prevent retailers from receiving the consoles they ordered ahead of the release.
Microsoft has also acknowledged supply issues with Xbox hardware. Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball confirmed that demand for the console exceeds supply and that production is facing severe constraints.
What the Retailer Said and Microsoft’s Confirmation of Xbox Supply Constraints
The senior games buyer told The Game Business that due to ongoing issues with hardware component availability, they won’t receive the units they want before GTA.
Demand is expected to outstrip supply during the year-end period. This warning highlights a trend that has been developing throughout 2026.
Component shortages, driven by AI-related memory pressures that have also increased prices for phones, PCs, and Macs, have made console manufacturing more difficult and costly.
Retailers have ordered significant stock in anticipation of GTA 6’s release, but suppliers are unable to meet those volume requests.
Matthew Ball, Xbox’s Chief Strategy Officer, told The Game Business that demand for the console currently exceeds supply. He explained that Xbox is putting the consoles in as many stores as possible and producing them as quickly as they can.
However, there are limitations on how fast the manufacturing can ramp up, and it’s not due to a lack of demand. While they need to do more, constraints are preventing a faster supply increase.
Microsoft has not provided specific production targets or detailed supply timelines beyond acknowledging these limitations.
What This Means for Buyers Ahead of the GTA 6 Launch
Users planning to buy a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S to play GTA 6 should consider buying before the late summer rush, when supply pressures are expected to increase.
They should also watch for restocks at major retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and the platform manufacturers’ own stores.
It is advisable to avoid third-party resale markets, where scalping could drive prices well above the manufacturer’s suggested retail price as the launch nears.
Additionally, considering the PS5 Pro, which is priced at $699 and has generally been more consistently available than the standard PS5, might be worthwhile.
Users who already own a current-generation console do not need to take any further action to play GTA 6 when it launches on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Sony vs. Microsoft Marketing Push as GTA 6 Release Nears
Both platform holders are actively positioning themselves for the launch of GTA 6. Sony has updated the PS5 dashboard to promote the game and changed the PlayStation app’s appearance to align with Rockstar’s branding.
Pre-orders now include custom PS5 welcome screens. Sony has stated that GTA 6 “will play best on PS5.” Microsoft has publicly acknowledged supply constraints but continues to promote the game on Xbox. As the November release approaches, the competition between the two platforms is becoming more intense.
The supply pressure on console hardware is part of a wider trend affecting the consumer electronics industry. Smartphone shipments are expected to decrease by 15 percent in 2026, and the PC market is projected to decline by 11.3 percent.
Recently, Apple increased prices for iPads and Macs, citing ongoing memory cost pressures. Valve also announced a significant price increase for the Steam Deck.
GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC version has not yet been confirmed. Pre-orders went live on June 25, with the standard edition priced at $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition at $99.99.
