Johannesburg Street Food Businesses Gain Global Attention

Johannesburg is gaining global attention for more than its business districts and economic influence. The city’s street food culture has become an international attraction, highlighting the entrepreneurs, small businesses and communities that are shaping South Africa’s evolving food economy.

In 2026, Johannesburg was ranked among the world’s top 10 street food cities by Time Out, placing eighth in its global list of the 20 Best Cities in the World for Street Food. The ranking placed Johannesburg alongside globally recognised food destinations including Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur, Mexico City, Hanoi and Bangkok.

While the recognition celebrates food, it also reflects a wider business opportunity: local food entrepreneurs are turning cultural traditions into businesses that support communities, attract visitors and strengthen the city’s tourism economy.

Johannesburg’s Street Food Economy Is Growing

Street food has long been part of everyday life in Johannesburg, but its role is expanding as travellers increasingly search for authentic experiences connected to local communities.

For many visitors, discovering a city through its food has become a key part of tourism. This shift creates opportunities for small businesses, independent vendors and food entrepreneurs who offer traditional dishes with unique local stories.

Johannesburg’s food scene combines township flavours, indigenous ingredients and modern creativity. Behind many popular dishes are entrepreneurs who have built businesses around family recipes, community demand and growing interest from international visitors.

The Local Businesses Behind Johannesburg’s Food Culture

One example highlighted by Time Out is Amanda’s in Soweto, where the famous kota — a quarter loaf of bread filled with chips, polony, sauces and other ingredients — has become a symbol of South African street food culture.

The popularity of dishes like the kota demonstrates how simple, affordable food can become a recognised part of a city’s identity.

Another example is The Hot Pot Kitchen in Midrand, a food truck founded by TK and Pablo Tshiololi after both lost their jobs. The business combines indigenous ingredients, township flavours and traditional South African cooking, offering dishes such as grilled mala, masonja cooked with tomato and onion, and flame-grilled tilapia served with pap.

Stories like these show how food entrepreneurship can create new economic opportunities while preserving local traditions.

Why Street Food Matters for South Africa’s Tourism Economy

The growth of Johannesburg’s street food reputation comes at a time when travellers are increasingly looking for experiences that connect them with local people and culture.

Food tourism can benefit local economies by directing spending toward small businesses, independent operators and local suppliers.

For Johannesburg, street food is not only about meals. It represents entrepreneurship, community development and the ability of local businesses to introduce South African culture to a global audience.

As international visitors discover the city’s food scene, restaurants, vendors, markets and food trucks have opportunities to grow their customer base and reach new markets.

From Local Vendors to Global Recognition

Johannesburg’s ranking among the world’s leading street food cities shows how local industries can gain international attention when culture, entrepreneurship and tourism come together.

The city’s food businesses are proving that global recognition does not only come from large corporations or established brands. Small entrepreneurs and community-based businesses can also play an important role in shaping a city’s global reputation.

For South Africa, Johannesburg’s street food success represents a wider opportunity: using local creativity and entrepreneurship to build stronger tourism experiences and support economic growth.
