Microsoft is introducing a “link to location” feature in Word for Windows and macOS. The new option lets users create a link that points to a specific place in a document. When someone opens the link, they go straight to the intended section instead of scrolling to find it.

Microsoft says this is especially helpful for long documents and for teams working together or giving feedback. The process uses the right-click menu and only takes a few steps.

What Word’s Link to Location Feature Does

Microsoft frames the feature around a common frustration in long documents. “If you work on long, complex documents, you’ve probably experienced the frustration of telling a teammate, ‘See the section halfway down page 47,’ and waiting while they scroll to find the right content,” Microsoft said.

“With the ability to link to a location, you can take collaborators exactly where they need to go. Just create a shareable link to a specific part of the document, and when someone opens the link, they’ll land exactly where you intended.”

Microsoft says the main benefits are faster editing and discussion, quicker feedback and review, easier navigation to specific content, clearer communication about where feedback is needed, and less back-and-forth for teams.

How To Access The Link to Location Feature

Microsoft says the feature is simple to use, requiring only a few steps:

    1. Open a Word document on a Windows or Mac device.
    2. Select the content where you want to create a link.
    3. Right-click on the selection to open the context menu, then select “Copy Link to Location.”

The copied link can then be shared with collaborators, who land at the selected content when they open it.

The feature is rolling out now to Word for Windows and macOS. Microsoft has not said if it will be limited to certain Microsoft 365 plans or when the rollout will finish, so availability may differ depending on your account.
