    Algiers has begun to spell out the case behind its rupture with Abu Dhabi, alleging attempts to influence the 2019 and 2024 presidential elections. The claims are explosive – but the account carrying them provides little evidence of how the operations supposedly worked.

    When Algeria broke diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates on 10 September, it cited “provocative and hostile acts” but offered few specifics. The dispute had been building for years, fuelled by Abu Dhabi’s ties with Morocco, its support for Rabat’s position on Western Sahara, its normalisation of relations with Israel and competing interests in Libya and the Sahel.
