MTN Group and Airtel Africa form the two leading telecoms companies in Sub-Saharan Africa with a combined subscriber base of over 506 million users. While MTN spreads across 16 markets, Airtel spreads its operations across 14 markets; all in Sub-Saharan Africa.
On the continent, telcos’ scalability and growth depend largely on their ability to offer affordable, high-quality mobile data plans, especially in markets where both are present, such as Nigeria, Zambia, Uganda, Rwanda, and the Republic of Congo.
However, operators offer different mobile data plans based on market peculiarities. Spotlighting the differences between MTN and Airtel prices, we highlight in this article how telcos’ prices reflect different market realities across the five markets.
The data used consists of daily, weekly, and monthly data plans as of September 2026, using exchange rates as of Thursday, September 24, 2026, to ensure accuracy.
MTN data price across 5 markets: What we found

In Nigeria, MTN employs a pricing model that makes customers high-data consumers. Its per-unit rate of $0.17/GB on large monthly bundles (75GB for ₦18,000) shows its focus on high-capacity scaling. In Zambia, MTN appeals to low-income subscribers by charging $0.34/GB on daily 1.5GB tiers. However, its per-GB rates increase to $0.54/GB on weekly and monthly packages.
MTN maintains an indifferent cost structure across daily, weekly, and monthly tiers in Rwanda. Daily (1GB at $0.34) and weekly (10GB at $0.34/GB) carry identical per-gigabyte costs, but drop to $0.23/GB for 30GB in the monthly tier.
Compared to other markets, MTN offers more small data packages in Uganda. For instance, 70MB for UGX 500/$0.13 and 165MB for UGX 1,000/$0.25, but the low cost comes with a high per-GB rate. In contrast, the operator offers a high-cost model in the Republic of Congo, as price/GB ranges from $0.61/GB on daily tiers to $0.86/GB on monthly plans (50.5GB for 25,000 FCFA).
Airtel across 5 markets: What we found
With the intense competition in Nigeria, Airtel closely matches MTN on volume tiers, with both pricing 1GB weekly at ₦800 ($0.58/GB). However, its entry-level daily options are higher, at $0.50/GB (500MB for ₦350).
In Zambia, Airtel competes by offering slightly more data at a similar price to MTN. At 50 ZMW, Airtel provides 5.5GB ($0.37/GB) compared to MTN’s 4.7GB ($0.54/GB).
In Uganda, Airtel sets a larger scale at $0.64/GB across large weekly (11GB for UGX 25,000) and monthly tiers (12GB for UGX 30,000), but sets the same bundle in daily tiers. Airtel matches MTN’s exact rates across major plans in Rwanda. Not only are the plans identical, but the associated prices match.
In the Republic of Congo, Airtel offers an increased bundle. Monthly rates reach $2.00/GB (65GB for 75,000 FCFA), while weekly plans reach $2.60/GB, which is more than three times MTN’s rates in the Republic of Congo.

Overall observations
- Compared to other markets, MTN offers its most affordable data prices in Nigeria ($0.17/GB) and Rwanda ($0.23/GB).
- Conversely, the Republic of Congo is by far MTN’s most expensive market, as monthly data costs reach approximately $0.86/GB, nearly 5x higher than in Nigeria.
- For Airtel, Nigeria is its cheapest territory, with about $0.18/GB for monthly plans. Republic of Congo is extremely expensive for Airtel subscribers, where a 65GB monthly package costs $130.07 ($2.00/GB), and weekly plans are nearly $2.60/GB.
Why operators offer different data plans and prices

MTN and Airtel do not present similar data prices and plans across markets due to various factors such as population density, currency volatility, differences in network infrastructure costs, market competition, purchasing power, and government regulations that include sector-specific levies and spectrum fees.
For instance, operators in the Republic of Congo, with a $1/576.60 FCFA conversion rate, incur higher operational costs due to internet transit fees and terrain constraints, driving mobile data prices up to around $0.86 to $2.60/GB.
In Uganda, the micro bundle adoption reflects a pricing strategy that’s adapted to low-income daily wage cycles. A GSMA report shows that smartphone price is 23% of average monthly income per capita in Uganda as of 2025. In fact, more than half of the population (58%) are without an internet-enabled device.
