Some movies entertain us for a couple of hours, while others stay with us long after the credits roll. Classic movies have a way of telling timeless stories that remain relevant while introducing unforgettable characters, performances, and ideas. Whether they make us laugh, cry, question the world around us, or simply see life from a different perspective, these are the movies that earn their place in cinematic history.

From heartfelt romantic comedies to psychological thrillers and inspiring dramas, each of the following offers something unique, whether it is a story about love and loss, a critique of modern society, the importance of believing in yourself, or the power of embracing individuality. They may come from different eras and genres, but they are all worth experiencing at least once. If you have somehow missed any of these classics, now is the perfect time to change that.

    Sleepless in Seattle

    Starting on a lighter note

While some of the other movies on this list can feel quite dark and gritty, Sleepless in Seattle is, at its core, a romantic comedy. This doesn’t mean that it is without its depth, though. It depicts the story of Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks), who moves to Seattle with his son after losing his wife. His son calls into a radio station to help him find love again, capturing the hearts of listeners all over the country, including Annie Reed (Meg Ryan), who becomes convinced that they are meant to be together.

The film deals with grief and closure while exploring the romantic connection of two people meeting for the first time in different stages of their lives. This contrast is what makes their story so compelling. It also touches on love and destiny as two things that are intertwined, but it somehow doesn’t ever feel too cheesy.

    Fight Club

    As relevant today as ever

Back in 1999, Fight Club actually first debuted at the Venice Film Festival. Its dark themes and heavy criticism of society were not received well, with several festival attendees booing. Critics were split, and it didn’t end up doing all that well at the box office. I, among many others, believe that it is one of the most apt critiques of our society, and it has become a cult classic. In hindsight, the hostile reaction it got in Venice was actually a perfect part of Fight Club‘s story.

It’s a perfect depiction of an unreliable narrator, with the main character (Edward Norton) constantly blurring the line between reality and his own perceptions. The movie offers a harsh critique of consumerism, muscle fragility, the perception of mental health, and authoritarianism. It also warns of the dangers of a charismatic leader, with Brad Pitt playing the chaotic role of Tyler Durden to perfection. These core themes can easily be applied to the world that we live in today, as much as they could be to the state of society in the late 1990s.

    Good Will Hunting

The start of a magical duo

We’ve become quite used to seeing Matt Damon and Ben Affleck on the big screen, but when Good Will Hunting released in 1997, both were still finding their feet in the industry. Both of them found critical mainstream success for their role in the romantic drama. Some might not already know this, but the pair actually co-wrote the screenplay together.

Will Hunting (Damon) is a young janitor at MIT with a brilliant talent for mathematics and a troubled past. Through therapy with Sean Maguire (Robin Williams), Will is forced to own his difficult choices, look past his fear of failure and vulnerability, and finally take a chance on himself. It is a movie that will undoubtedly leave you in tears.

    American Psycho

A movie that is permanently misinterpreted

American Psycho is a film that is, in many ways, very similar to Fight Club. It sharply critiques our materialistic society and features a notoriously unreliable narrator. While some small groups have come to look up to Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), he represents how toxic conformity, masculinity, and consumerism can be in our fast-paced, money-focused world.

Bateman has everything that we’re taught to want, from his high-paying career to his designer clothes, but underneath it all he is empty, with his carefully constructed personality being a thin veil for his ever-increasing rage. The movie satirizes this lifestyle, bringing an element of comedy to an otherwise pretty gruesome tale.

    Dead Poets Society

    Find deeper meaning through art

This is yet another movie that showcases the impressive range of Robin Williams. He plays John Keating, an English teacher at a prestigious boy’s boarding school who uses poetry to teach his pupils about the satisfaction that comes with self-expression. Dead Poets Society gave some other familiar names their big break, with it being one of the most important movies in the careers of both Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard.

Dead Poets Society is a celebration of art and shows just how integral expression is to the youth of the world. It teaches that meaning isn’t found in how much money you have or how prestigious your career is, but rather in experiences and how we choose to share those experiences with one another.

These are some of the endless list of classics everyone should experience

In truth, there are endless films out there to explore, with a bevy of classics that could have made this list. We can get so sucked into focusing on the newest releases with the biggest budgets, but the above showcases that the best stories are often quite simple. There are tons of features out there that will touch your heart and are capable of changing how you see the world if you let them.
