Alan, the French health insurance company with footballer Kylian Mbappé as an investor, today announced the completion of its acquisition of Tanel, a digital health company founded in 2021 by Mouhamed Ndoye and Makhtar Diop.

The transaction also provides an exit for Tanel’s founders and investors, including Ventures Platform, AAIC Investment, and angels such as Dr Mussaad M. Al-Razouki, Alyune-Blondin Diop, and Charles ‘Chuck’ Slaughter.

Headquartered in Dakar and operating in Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire, Tanel helps companies manage employee health coverage through digital solutions that simplify access to care, streamline member support, and facilitate the management of healthcare benefits.

For the past ten years, Alan has built a model that combines prevention and health insurance. Already serving more than 1.1 million members across France, Spain, Belgium, and Canada, the company will now bring this model to Africa for the first time. Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire provide a strategic entry point, with a health insurance market estimated at close to €600 million and growing by approximately 10% annually.

Mouhamed Ndoye and Makhtar Diop, co-founders of Tanel, will continue to lead local operations and drive Alan’s development in West Africa.

Jean-Charles Samuelian-Werve, CEO and co-founder of Alan, said: “Healthcare systems are evolving around the world, but people’s expectations remain the same: easier access to care and support throughout their lives, because we believe healthcare cannot wait. Meeting these expectations requires combining technology that can innovate at scale with teams that have an intimate understanding of their local markets. That is why we chose to acquire Tanel. By bringing together our technology platform and the recognised expertise of Tanel’s teams, we will be able to accelerate the rollout of new services and, over the long term, build a leading preventive healthcare player in Africa.”

Mouhamed Ndoye and Makhtar Diop, co-founders of Tanel, commented in a joint statement: “Since founding Tanel, our ambition has been to help African businesses provide their employees with simpler, more transparent and more effective access to healthcare. Needs continue to grow, and employers are looking for increasingly effective solutions. Joining Alan allows us to take the next step by combining the power of a leading technology platform with our knowledge of local markets and the close relationships we have built with our clients.”
