    ANC’s anti-apartheid allies break ranks as support slides

    The African National Congress is losing the support of COSATU and the Communist Party, allies dating back to the anti-apartheid struggle, as it heads towards the 4 November local elections, with South Africa’s traditionally black vote set to fracture even further.

    South Africa’s labour federation, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), was forced to abandon its elective conference this week after fragmentation and factionalism left delegates unable to agree on who was eligible to participate. The conference is expected to reconvene within weeks.
