    The Burundi and current African Union president defends his country’s position against accusations from Rwanda that it is fuelling sub-regional tensions by sending troops to support the Congolese army.

    On 10 December 2025, less than a week after the signing in Washington of a peace agreement between presidents Félix Tshisekedi and Paul Kagame, Uvira, the provisional capital of South Kivu in eastern DRC, fell into the hands of Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC)/M23 rebels. Supported by the Rwandan army, the rebels occupied this town 30km from Burundi’s capital, Bujumbura, for nearly a month before withdrawing under US pressure.
