Wildfires are becoming a growing challenge across Southern Africa, threatening rural communities, agricultural businesses, and natural ecosystems. Rising temperatures, changing weather patterns, dry vegetation, and extreme conditions are increasing the risk of more frequent and intense fire events.

For farmers and landowners, wildfire preparedness is becoming an important part of climate resilience. In many rural areas, emergency response can be limited by distance, infrastructure challenges, and a lack of immediate access to firefighting resources.

As climate risks increase, technology and better resource management are helping communities prepare before disasters occur.

Building a first line of defence

Portable water pumping systems are one practical solution that can help farmers and rural property owners improve emergency readiness.

According to Brad Barthorpe, Africa Distribution Sales Manager at Husqvarna, communities in wildfire-prone regions can no longer rely only on traditional fire seasons as changing weather patterns create new risks throughout the year.

“Whether sparked by nature or human carelessness, wildfires can spread rapidly. Communities need to remain prepared and understand the tools available to help protect homes, farms, and surrounding areas,” Barthorpe says.

Portable fuel-powered pumps allow users to move water from sources such as dams, rivers, boreholes, or storage tanks. During a wildfire threat, they can be used to create wet buffer zones around vulnerable areas, including buildings, dry grass, wooden fences, and other materials that can ignite from flying embers.

While a water pump cannot stop a major wildfire, it can help reduce the risk of smaller ignition points developing around properties.

    Practical technologies improving wildfire preparedness

Technology is increasingly becoming part of climate adaptation strategies, particularly in rural areas where rapid emergency response may not always be available.

    Portable water pumping systems

Mobile pumping equipment provides flexibility by allowing water to be transported and used where it is needed most. Farmers can prepare by identifying reliable water sources, keeping equipment maintained, and ensuring pumps are ready before wildfire conditions develop.

    Smart water management

Water availability is becoming a critical issue as drought periods become more unpredictable. Combining pumps with storage tanks, irrigation systems, and water monitoring tools can help agricultural businesses manage resources more efficiently.

Better water planning supports not only wildfire preparation but also crop production, livestock management, and long-term farm resilience.

Weather monitoring and early warning systems

Digital weather platforms, satellite-based fire monitoring, and local alert systems can provide earlier information about dangerous conditions.

Access to timely information allows communities and businesses to make decisions before fires spread, including protecting assets, moving livestock, and preparing emergency equipment.

    Reliable equipment during power disruptions

Extreme weather events can affect electricity supply. Fuel-powered equipment provides an alternative when electric systems are unavailable, helping maintain access to water during emergencies and supporting essential agricultural activities.

    Beyond firefighting: supporting agricultural resilience

The role of water technology extends beyond wildfire response. Farmers across Southern Africa face multiple climate-related challenges, from droughts to flooding.

Portable pumps can help remove excess water after heavy rainfall, support irrigation during dry periods, and maintain essential water access for livestock and crops.

For agricultural businesses, these solutions are part of a wider approach to managing climate uncertainty and protecting operations.

    Preparing for a changing climate

Wildfire resilience is not only about responding after a fire starts. It requires planning, reliable equipment, access to information, and better management of natural resources.

As Southern Africa faces increasing environmental pressures, technologies that improve water access, emergency preparedness, and agricultural resilience will become increasingly important for communities and businesses.
